Why is Vitamin B12 important?
Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is a vital nutrient essential for maintaining a healthy nervous system, producing red blood cells, and supporting DNA synthesis and energy metabolism. A deficiency in vitamin B12 can lead to a range of health issues, including anaemia and neurological problems. Symptoms may develop gradually and can include fatigue, weakness, pale or jaundiced skin, numbness, walking difficulties, mood changes, and memory problems.
What are the symptoms of B12 deficiency
Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause a range of symptoms that affect both physical and mental health. Common signs include:
- Tiredness or extreme fatigue
- Weakness
- Shortness of breath
- Pale or jaundiced skin
- A sore, red tongue or mouth ulcers
- Mood changes, such as irritability or depression
- Memory problems or difficulty concentrating
- Pins and needles (paraesthesia)
- Disturbed vision
- Unsteady movements or balance issues
